Weather update for Chicago area

It is astonishingly cold here today. It’s noon, and although the sun is shining, the temperature is a meager 13 degrees. It’s not soooooo bad for the humans who have the sense to wear down–my full-length down coat is ever at the ready, but my poor dog–her paws need some balm to protect the pads from the salt and whatnot. I’m not sure how this is going to work. I envision coating her pads with balm, which she proceeds to lick off. Adventures in dog ownership!

I’ve listened to the unabridged version of Ulysses, just the first part, and so far, I’m enchanted.

The Chicago Public Library is now offering on-line downloads of audio books. This is remarkably handy. I borrow the audio cds on occasion, but those are a little unruly for loading onto ones ipod or computer because keeping track of the discs in order with their generically labeled tracks is challenging. I want to mention how much I love public libraries. There are some extraordinary resources there, despite the fact that they have also became a haven for people who like to use the library computers to look at porn. I fail to see how a person’s civil liberties are infringed upon by not having access to pornography in public on the public dime. But that’s just me.

I’ve been dogless for 8 years now, but I understand that they actually sell booties for city dogs who have to deal with the salt issue. We used to have a Golden Retriever who loved the snow, but she would also get little ice balls between her toes, which was very painful, and the booties would help with that as well. She was not fond of the process of getting rid of them once we got home, which was dipping each of her feet in turn in a bowl of very warm water to melt them off. Ingrate. For a Golden Retriever, she was a water wimp. Hated baths, swimming and getting her feet wet. It’s a good thing I didn’t need her to actually retrieve anything out of the water. We still miss her every day.

I checked out the Chicago Public Library website after reading about it on your blog (which I hooked from nablopomo btw) and thought it was a fantastic resource. I checked out the books for children and was all set to download stuff for my granddaughter who eats up books like there’s no tomorrow, and was gutted to discover that as I live in Shropshire England rather than in Chicago USA I can’t get a Library card and can’t get the books. I’d be more than willing to pay for the privilege but even that isn’t allowed. It seems shortsighted to me to have a resource which could so easily be available and saleable across the world restricted to just one local tax area, but there you go, stuff sucks sometimes.
You’re very lucky and I’m very very envious.
Love your blog btw which is why I’m now a new regular reader :O)
